Segregation refers to the enforced separation of different racial groups in housing, education, transportation, and other public facilities. It's more than just people living apart; it's about a systematic division created by laws or social practices that deny equal access and opportunity. The history of segregation is particularly painful in the United States, especially concerning the treatment of African Americans after the Civil War.

For decades, "Jim Crow" laws in many Southern states mandated segregation—separate schools, buses, restaurants, and even restrooms. This wasn't accidental; it was a deliberate attempt to maintain white supremacy and social control. The landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education (1954) declared state-sponsored segregation in public schools unconstitutional, marking a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.

However, segregation isn't limited to race or history. It can also refer to the separation of people based on religion, gender, or social class. Even today, we talk about "de facto" segregation when neighborhoods become overwhelmingly homogeneous—lacking diversity due to economic factors, historical zoning, or biased housing policies. In a broader sense, the term can also describe the physical separation of things, such as "waste segregation" for recycling or the "segregation of duties" in a workplace to prevent fraud.

In a social context, the word often carries a strong moral judgment because it usually involves inequality. It's not simply being different; it's being treated differently, and unfairly, because of those differences. In other contexts, though, the term can be neutral, as in sorting waste or separating responsibilities at work. Most often, when people use segregation about society, they mean separation shaped by power and unequal rights.
