script

A2
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /skrˈɪpt/

US

  • /ˈskrɪpt/

Description

A script is more than something actors read in a movie or play, though that is still its most common meaning. It can also mean a set of written instructions for what should happen next. In computing, a script is a small program or list of commands that tells a computer to do a task. In everyday speech, people also use "script" for the words someone is expected to say or for a fixed pattern of behavior in a certain situation.

The word also has older and more specialized uses. It can refer to a style of handwriting, such as cursive script, and in informal American English, it can mean a prescription from a doctor. At its core, the idea is usually the same: something written that guides action, speech, or form.
