Rumination is not just thinking. It is a kind of slow, repeated turning over of thoughts in the mind. In many modern contexts, especially in psychology and everyday speech, it means getting stuck on negative experiences, worries, or feelings. It is like a record player stuck in the same groove: your mind keeps returning to the same idea, but no real solution appears. You may replay past events, wonder what you did wrong, or keep imagining bad outcomes without moving forward.

But the word is not always negative. In more formal or literary use, it can also mean deep reflection or meditation on an idea. A writer might speak of a person's rumination on time, memory, or loss. Even there, the sense of repeated inward thought is still present.

The word comes from "ruminate," which originally referred to chewing cud. Just as an animal chews and re-chews its food, a person in rumination returns to the same thought again and again. That image explains both the neutral sense of careful reflection and the more common negative sense of mental looping.

Some reflection is useful, of course. We all think back on mistakes, choices, and conversations. Rumination becomes a problem when the mind stays trapped there, circling without rest or progress. During stress or sadness, this pattern can make those feelings stronger. That is why the word often suggests not just thought, but thought that has become heavy, repetitive, and hard to escape.
