A room is often a part of a building with its own use, like a bedroom, kitchen, or classroom. But the word also means space in a more general way. You can make room for one more person at the table, say there is no room in your bag, or talk about room for change, growth, or error. It is a simple word, but it works in both everyday life and more abstract ideas.

The word "room" usually brings to mind a part of a building: a bedroom, a bathroom, an office, or a waiting room. In this common sense, it means an area inside a house, school, hospital, or another building that is used for a particular purpose. This is the meaning learners meet first, and it is the one used in many everyday phrases such as "my room," "the next room," or "a room with a window."

But "room" also often means space or enough space. If there is room in a car, one more person can get in. If there is room on a shelf, you can put something there. In this use, the word is often uncountable: "There isn't much room here" or "Do we have room for dessert?" From there, the meaning grows into more abstract uses. People talk about room for improvement, room for doubt, room for discussion, or room to grow. In these cases, the word is about possibility, freedom, or capacity rather than walls and doors.

The word also appears in many fixed expressions. To "make room" means to clear space for something or someone. "No room for error" means mistakes cannot be allowed.
