A restriction is something that holds you back—a rule, a limit, or even a physical barrier. Think of speed limits on the highway, dietary restrictions for allergies, or the restrictions placed on your freedom when you're grounded! Restrictions aren't always negative; sometimes they are necessary to keep us safe or maintain order. A parent might place restrictions on their teenager's phone use, while a doctor might recommend dietary restrictions after a diagnosis.

While "restriction" is the noun form (the rule itself), it is closely tied to the verb "restrict" (the act of limiting). For example, "There were severe travel restrictions during the pandemic," and "The new law restricts access to certain information." Understanding what is allowed often comes down to understanding what is not allowed.

A restriction is something that limits or controls an action, movement, or freedom. It implies a boundary or constraint—something that prevents you from doing whatever you want without consequence. When we want to describe the action, we use the verb "to restrict." You might say, "The doctor restricted her diet to bland foods," or "The company decided to restrict employee travel due to budget cuts." Ultimately, whether it's a rule, a boundary, or a limit imposed for safety, fairness, or control—a restriction is anything that keeps something within defined limits. It defines what can't be done as much as what can.
