A restriction is something that limits or controls an action, movement, or freedom. It implies a boundary or constraint—something that prevents you from doing whatever you want without consequence. For example: "The new regulations placed restrictions on the amount of water farmers could use," meaning they were limited in how much water they were allowed to draw for irrigation.

Restrictions can be physical—like a fence limiting access to private property, or a seatbelt limiting your movement for your own safety. They can also be legal—such as age restrictions on buying alcohol, or building restrictions that limit the height of structures in a city to preserve the skyline.

The word "restriction" often carries a negative connotation, suggesting that something is being held back or denied. However, restrictions are frequently put in place for protection. For instance, "Safety restrictions at the construction site helped prevent accidents." They can also be used to ensure fairness: "Entry restrictions kept the event safe and orderly."

When we want to describe the action, we use the verb "to restrict." You might say, "The doctor restricted her diet to bland foods," or "The company decided to restrict employee travel due to budget cuts." Ultimately, whether it's a rule, a boundary, or a limit imposed for safety, fairness, or control—a restriction is anything that keeps something within defined limits. It defines what can't be done as much as what can.
