verb

Pronunciation

US

  • /ˈrɛkəɡˌnaɪz/

Description

To recognize something - whether it is a face in a crowd, a song on the radio, or even a feeling inside you - is to identify it as something you have seen, heard, or known before. It is more than just seeing something; it is linking it to your memory and understanding what it is. You might recognize a childhood friend after years apart, or recognize the signs of an approaching storm. Sometimes, recognizing also means seeing a truth clearly, like when you finally recognize that a certain pattern of behavior is unhealthy.

Think of a detective solving a case: they recognize that certain clues point to the suspect. Or think of a musician who recognizes a chord progression after hearing only a few notes. This does not always happen at once; sometimes it comes slowly. "I didn't quite recognize him at first; he's changed so much!"
