To identify something is to figure out what it is or who someone is, whether it is a mysterious object, a suspect in a crime, or even the cause of your own feelings. Think of a detective studying clues to identify a culprit, or a hiker using a field guide to identify a rare bird.

You can identify things by sight ("Can you identify this plant?"), through information ("The police identified the driver using his license."), or by noticing a pattern ("I could identify his voice anywhere."). Sometimes it is about proving who you are, such as when you show ID. At its heart, the word is about finding out and stating clearly who or what someone or something is.

To identify means to recognize, establish, or determine the identity of something or someone. It goes beyond simply seeing; it involves understanding what something is and being able to name or categorize it. For example, when a scientist identifies a new species of butterfly, they are observing its unique characteristics and classifying it within the natural world.

This process is also vital for human connection and justice. To say "witnesses were asked to identify the suspect in a police lineup" means they had to pick out the specific person they saw. It is also used when talking about internal awareness: "She struggled to identify the source of her anxiety," meaning she couldn't pinpoint exactly what was causing her distress.

Context is key. In everyday life, you may be asked to identify yourself by showing a document or giving details that prove who you are. In modern social contexts, people also use the word to describe how they see themselves or what they relate to: someone might "identify as" a member of a certain community, or "identify with" a character in a movie because that character's feelings seem familiar. Whether it is solving a mystery, naming a plant, understanding your emotions, or explaining your place in society, to identify is to work out and make clear who or what someone or something is.
