The word reach has a surprisingly broad range of meanings, all centered around the idea of extending towards or attaining something. At its most basic, it describes the physical act of stretching out an arm or leg: "He reached for the book on the top shelf."

But reach quickly expands beyond the purely physical. It can mean to achieve a goal or target: "After years of hard work, she finally reached her goal of becoming a doctor." It can also describe how far something extends geographically: "The railway line reaches into remote areas."

Just as importantly, reach can imply influence or impact. We talk about the "reach" of a social media campaign, meaning how many people it affects. A teacher hopes their lessons will "reach" their students, and a politician tries to "reach" voters with a message they understand.

Figuratively, something beyond your reach is unattainable, while within your reach is possible. You might say an expensive car is "beyond my reach," or that success is "within our reach." The phrase "out of reach" suggests something is inaccessible or difficult to obtain.
