The word ramus comes from Latin and means "branch." That basic picture stays with the word wherever it appears: a main structure sends out a smaller part, and that part is called a ramus. Although the term can describe an actual branch in older or technical writing, today you are most likely to meet it in anatomy and other scientific contexts.

In anatomy, a ramus is a branch-like part of a bone, nerve, or blood vessel. A common example is the mandibular ramus, the upright part of the lower jaw that rises toward the skull. Spinal nerves also split into branches called rami, with each branch going in a different direction to serve the body. In this setting, the word is not poetic at all. It is a precise label for a part that extends from something larger.

In botany and related biological writing, the word stays close to its original meaning and can refer to a branch or a branching part of a plant or similar structure. This use is more technical than everyday.

You may occasionally see ramus used figuratively for an offshoot or division of a larger system, but that is much less common than the scientific use. When it does appear that way, it still carries the same image of branching out from one source.
