Puffery refers to exaggerated or boastful statements used to promote something, often a product, service, or even a person. It is common in marketing and advertising and usually relies on opinions and superlatives rather than clear, provable facts. You can think of it as promotional language meant to create excitement and make something sound impressive.

In a legal context, puffery sits in a gray area. Outright false claims about a product's features can count as fraud or deceptive advertising, but puffery is often allowed because it uses vague, opinion-based language such as "the best," "most amazing," or "revolutionary." A coffee company may claim its beans offer "an unparalleled taste experience" because that is a matter of opinion. However, it cannot claim those beans will cure a medical condition without proof.

Although the word is most often used for advertising, sales pitches, and public promotion, it can also describe personal behavior. A politician might use puffery by making their role in a successful project sound larger than it was, or a job seeker might describe an ordinary task as if it were a major achievement.

The word comes from "puff," and the image fits well: something is being blown up to seem bigger or better than it really is. So, the next time you see an ad promising amazing results or hear someone talk about their "world-class" skills, remember that it may just be puffery: inflated language meant to impress rather than a statement of plain fact.
