Pronunciation

UK

  • /plˈeɪt/

US

  • /ˈpleɪt/

Description

We often think of a plate as something we eat from: a round, usually ceramic dish for holding food. But "plate" means more than just dinner. It can also mean a flat piece of material, such as a metal plate used in construction or a printed plate used for making copies. In science, it names the huge sections of the Earth's crust that move slowly over time. It can even be a verb: you might plate a meal nicely for a guest, or a jeweler might plate a ring with gold to give it a bright finish.
