A tray is a flat, shallow object made to hold, carry, or organize things. Many trays have slightly raised edges so items do not slide off easily. People often think first of a waiter carrying food and drinks, but trays are used in many parts of daily life. At home, a tray might bring breakfast to the table, hold cups of tea, catch mail and keys near the door, or carry a meal from the kitchen to the sofa. In cooking, a baking tray holds food in the oven. In offices and schools, trays can keep papers, tools, or supplies in one place.

The word is also used in more specific settings. A seed tray is used for starting plants. A printer tray holds paper. On a computer, the system tray is the part of the screen where small background-app icons appear. In all of these cases, the idea stays much the same: a tray is something shallow and open that helps support, sort, or move other things.
