A pest is usually a small animal or insect that causes trouble, especially in homes, gardens, or fields. Mosquitoes buzzing around your ears, mice in the pantry, or insects eating your plants are all common examples. The word can also be used for a person who is always bothering others. You might call a teasing little brother a "lovable pest" if he is annoying but you still care about him.

The word "pest" usually brings to mind unwanted creatures that invade homes, gardens, or farms and cause trouble. Think of aphids eating roses, termites damaging wood, or rats running around in the attic. These are classic examples: animals or insects that damage crops, spread disease, or simply become a nuisance.

The word comes from the Latin pestis, meaning "plague" or "contagious disease." In older English, "pest" could refer to a deadly disease or something that brought harm. That older sense helps explain why the modern word still suggests something harmful, unwanted, and in need of control.

Today, the word is most often used by gardeners, farmers, and homeowners for troublesome insects or animals, and in everyday speech for an annoying person. It is not usually used for just any problem. Whether it is a bug ruining your tomatoes, a mouse in the wall, or a child who keeps teasing you, the word suggests something small but bothersome that keeps causing trouble.
