Pollination is the vital process of transferring pollen—the fine powder produced by flowering plants—which allows them to create seeds and reproduce. Because plants are stationary, they often need a "delivery service" to move pollen between blooms, and that is where pollinators come in. A pollinator is any agent, whether a biological creature or a physical factor like the wind, that carries and deposits this pollen.

While the wind is the primary pollinator for grasses and many trees, the vast majority of flowering plants rely on animals. Bees are arguably the most famous pollinators, diligently flitting from flower to flower to collect nectar while inadvertently dusting their fuzzy bodies with pollen. Butterflies, moths, beetles, and even nectar-feeding bats also play crucial roles. They visit flowers in search of food, and as they move from one plant to the next, they transfer the pollen that fertilizes the plant.

This relationship is a beautiful example of mutualism: the plant gets help reproducing, and the pollinator receives a nutritious meal. However, pollinator populations currently face significant threats from habitat loss and pesticides, making their conservation more important than ever. Without these tireless workers, our food systems and natural landscapes would be drastically altered.
