Imagine you're telling a story about a stormy night. You could simply say, "The storm was strong." But what if you wrote, "The storm raged with fury, clawing at the windows and howling in protest"? That's personification. It is the literary device of giving human qualities—feelings, actions, or traits—to something that is not human. This could be an object like a storm or a river, a force like time or death, or an abstract idea like love, justice, or fear. Beyond literature, the word also applies when a person represents a quality so perfectly that they seem like a living version of it, such as calling a brave soldier the "personification of courage."

Personification is more than just colorful description; it creates connection and meaning. By giving non-human things human traits, writers help us understand them better and feel a stronger response. You'll find it all through literature. Emily Dickinson famously wrote that Death "kindly stopped" for her, turning death into a polite visitor. Everyday English uses it too in lines like "Justice is blind" or "Time flies." In art and public symbols, abstract ideas are also often shown as human figures, such as Justice as a blindfolded woman holding scales.

While metaphor compares one thing to another, personification specifically treats something non-human as if it were human. It is a powerful tool for writers and speakers because it adds depth, imagery, and feeling, making the world in language seem more alive and easier to connect with.
