Dehumanization is the psychological process by which individuals or groups are perceived as less than human—stripped of their individuality, dignity, and moral consideration. It is more than just intense dislike; it is an active denial of another person's full humanity. This can manifest in several chilling ways: portraying people as animals, insects, or diseases; denying them agency and complex emotions; or reducing an entire group to a single negative characteristic.

Historically, dehumanization has been a crucial precursor to atrocities like genocide and slavery. When one group views another as fundamentally "other"—lacking the same rights, feelings, or moral value—it becomes much easier to justify mistreatment, exploitation, and state-sanctioned violence. This is evident in Nazi propaganda that depicted Jewish people as vermin, or the dehumanizing language used to justify the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

However, dehumanization isn't limited to large-scale historical horrors. It occurs in everyday life through microaggressions, biased language, or the simple failure to acknowledge someone's unique presence. Online harassment and cyberbullying frequently rely on dehumanizing tactics to distance the aggressor from the victim's pain. It also persists within modern systems, such as bureaucratic processes that treat people as mere numbers or data points rather than living individuals. Recognizing these signs is vital for fostering empathy and protecting the inherent dignity of all human beings, reminding us that once we lose sight of another person's humanity, we risk losing our own too.
