Pentameter comes from Greek roots meaning "five" and "measure." In poetry, meter is the rhythmic pattern of a line, built from stressed and unstressed syllables. Pentameter specifically means that a line has five metrical feet.

A "foot" is a basic unit of rhythm. In English poetry, the most famous kind is iambic pentameter, where each foot is usually an iamb: an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one (da-DUM). That often gives the line about ten syllables, though poets may bend the pattern.

Still, pentameter does not only mean the iambic kind. It simply tells you there are five feet in the line. The feet could be iambs, trochees, or another pattern, depending on the poem. Even so, when people mention pentameter in English class, they often mean iambic pentameter because it is so common and important.

Why does it matter? This kind of line often feels balanced and steady, close to the flow of natural speech. That is one reason it has been used for centuries in English poetry and drama, from Chaucer to Shakespeare to Milton and beyond. When you can recognize pentameter, you can hear how poets shape rhythm to guide feeling, emphasis, and meaning.

For example, consider this line from Sonnet 18: "Shall I com-pare thee to a sum-mer's day?" You can hear the five-beat movement and the rise and fall of the language. That is pentameter in action. It is not always perfectly regular; poets often vary the rhythm for effect. But once you understand the structure, the poem's music becomes much easier to hear.
