payout

C2

Pronunciation

UK

  • /pˈeɪaʊt/

US

  • /ˈpeɪˌaʊt/

Description

A payout is money someone receives after a particular event, result, or agreement. Think of a winning lottery ticket: the cash you get is the payout. But it is not only about luck. An insurance company makes a payout after an approved claim, and a company may give a payout as a bonus or a share of profits. In gambling, the word can also connect to how much money a game gives back. So, whether it is prize money, insurance money, or part of a business profit, a payout is the money that comes to you in the end.
