Compensation refers to something—typically money, but not always—given as a form of payment for work done, or as reimbursement for loss, injury, or suffering. It's a broad term with roots in the idea of "balancing" things out.

In its most common usage, compensation is what you receive for your labor. This includes salary, wages, bonuses, benefits (like health insurance and paid time off), and other perks. A skilled carpenter might demand higher compensation than an apprentice because their expertise is more valuable.

If you accidentally damage someone's property, offering to pay for repairs is a form of compensation. Sometimes, people use compensation in a looser sense to mean anything that helps make up for hurt or disappointment. In practice, though, the word most often points to money or concrete help—something you can clearly point to as a fair "make-up" for what happened.
