A palisade is usually a defensive fence or wall made from tall vertical stakes or posts set closely together. In history, these barriers were often built from wood and used by armies, settlers, and communities as a quick way to protect a fort, camp, or village from attack. If you picture sharpened logs standing side by side around a settlement, you have the classic image of a palisade.

The word comes from the Old French palissade, meaning a fence made of stakes. By extension, it can also describe any barrier that has the same upright, fence-like form. In geology, for example, a line of steep cliffs or column-like rock can be called a palisade because it looks like a row of posts. In modern writing, the word may also be used more loosely for a strong barrier or boundary.

You may still see the idea in modern security fencing, but the word is most often used for historical defenses, fence-like structures, or natural formations that resemble them. It can also appear in a figurative way to suggest a firm barrier. For example: "A palisade of rules stood in his way."
