A fence is a structure built to enclose an area, create a boundary, or prevent access. Traditionally made of wood, metal, or wire, fences serve practical purposes like keeping livestock contained, protecting property, and providing privacy. For example: "The old farmhouse was surrounded by a weathered wooden fence," or "A high-security fence protected the military base."

But "fence" is not always about a physical barrier; it is also a verb. In sports, to fence means to fight with swords such as a foil, epee, or sabre in a controlled match or practice. The word can also describe verbal evasion. If someone asks a direct question and you reply in a way that avoids the point, they may say you are "fencing" with them.

There is also a crime-related meaning: a fence can be a person who buys and sells stolen goods. This is a less common everyday use, but it still appears in crime stories and news reports.

You might also hear the term "fence-sitting," which describes someone who remains neutral or indecisive on an issue, refusing to choose a side. They are metaphorically perched on top of the barrier, unable to commit to either direction. Whether it's a physical boundary, a sport of blades, or a verbal tactic for evasion, a fence is always about the lines we draw between ourselves and the world.
