Pain is something most of us know well, even if we meet it in different forms. Sometimes it arrives in the body: the sting of a paper cut, the throb of a headache, the sharp shock of a twisted ankle. Sometimes it settles in the heart or mind: the pain of grief, rejection, regret, or loneliness. In both cases, it describes an unpleasant feeling that can range from mild discomfort to intense suffering.

It often works as a warning. It tells us that something is wrong, that the body needs rest, care, or protection. But it is not always brief. Some kinds last long after an injury, illness, or difficult event, and that ongoing suffering can shape daily life in serious ways.

The word "pain" is also used in a broader, more figurative way. We speak of someone's pain when we mean emotional suffering, not just physical hurt. We also use it in expressions about effort or difficulty, as in "take pains," which means to try very carefully. And when we say "I feel your pain," we are showing understanding and sympathy.

From a sore back after a long day to the deep hurt of losing someone important, pain is part of life. It reminds us that we are vulnerable, but it also helps us understand the struggles of other people.
