An outfielder is a baseball player who stands in the outfield, the area beyond the infield. Their job is to catch fly balls, pick up balls hit into the grass, and stop runners from taking extra bases. Teams usually have three of them: a left fielder, a center fielder, and a right fielder. A good one needs speed, a strong throwing arm, and good judgment to follow where the ball will land. You can think of them as an important line of defense when the ball gets past the infield.

Imagine the wide grassy space beyond the infield on a baseball field. The players covering that area are the outfielders, and they play a big part in stopping hits from turning into bigger plays. They do not just wait for the ball to come to them. From the moment the batter makes contact, they are judging the ball's path, moving quickly, and getting ready to catch it or throw it back in.

There are three main positions in the outfield: left field, center field, and right field. The center fielder often covers the most ground, while the left and right fielders also need to react fast and handle difficult catches near the lines or the fence. All of them need speed to chase down fly balls, skill to field balls that roll into the outfield, and a strong arm to throw the ball back to the infield and hold runners.

In normal English, this word is used for baseball. It means one of the defensive players in the outfield, not a general word for someone standing on the outside of a group. So if you hear someone talk about an outfielder, they are almost certainly talking about baseball and about a player who covers the deep part of the field.
