The term "infielder" comes from baseball and refers to one of the defensive players stationed on the infield, the area around the four bases. In normal use, it means one of these four positions: first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, or third baseman. These players are often involved in fast plays, especially when a batter hits a ground ball or when runners are trying to move from base to base.

There are four main infield positions. The first baseman works near first base and often catches throws from other fielders to record outs. The second baseman covers the area between first and second base and helps on double plays. The shortstop usually covers the space between second and third and often handles many ground balls. The third baseman plays close to third base and must react quickly to sharply hit balls.

The word can also describe a player's role or main strength. If someone is called a "natural infielder," it suggests that the player is comfortable with quick reactions, clean fielding, and smart decisions in tight spaces. Good infielders usually need soft hands, fast footwork, and the ability to throw accurately under pressure.

The role has also changed over time. Modern baseball often values players who can move between different infield positions when needed. Some stay at one spot for most of their careers, while others are known as utility players and fill in wherever the team needs help. So when you hear "infielder," think of a baseball defender working near the bases, making quick plays, and helping control the center of the field.
