outfield

The outfield is the part of a baseball field beyond the infield. It is the larger open area where the left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder play. This is where players chase fly balls, field long hits, and try to stop runners from taking extra bases.

The word is also used in cricket for the area of the field outside the central pitch. In both sports, it names a real part of the playing field, not usually a general word for a remote place or an unusual idea.

The most common meaning of "outfield" is the part of a baseball field that lies beyond the infield. It is usually the wide grassy area stretching from the edge of the infield toward the outfield fence. The three outfielders play there: left field, center field, and right field. When a batter sends the ball deep, this is the space where fielders run, catch fly balls, and throw the ball back in to stop hits from turning into extra bases.

The word also appears in cricket. There, it means the part of the field outside the pitch and the close area around the batter. A ball driven into this space rolls across the outfield, and fielders try to stop it before too many runs are scored. In both baseball and cricket, the idea is simple: it is the outer playing area beyond the middle part of the field.

People sometimes connect the word with the idiom "out in left field," which means strange, unexpected, or far from what other people are thinking. But that expression is an idiom, not the usual meaning of "outfield" itself. On its own, "outfield" normally refers to the outer part of a baseball or cricket field.
