Imagine a baseball diamond. The infield is the area around and between home plate, first base, second base, and third base. It is the part of the field where many quick plays happen. This is the most common use of the word. You may also hear it in other sports settings, such as the area inside a running track.

The players in this part of a baseball field are called "infielders." If someone says, "He made a great play in the infield," it means he made the play near the bases rather than far out in the field.

The term "infield" most commonly refers to the part of a baseball or softball field that lies around and within the diamond made by home plate, first base, second base, and third base. This area is often made up of dirt and short grass, and it stands in contrast to the outfield, which stretches much farther from the bases. The first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman play there, and many fast, close plays happen in this part of the field.

The word also has a few other established uses. In track and field, it can mean the area inside the running track. In older farming language, it can mean the land nearest the farmhouse or buildings, as opposed to land farther away. That farming sense is much less common today, but it still appears in historical or regional writing.

So when you hear "infield," think first of the part of the baseball field near the bases. In other contexts, it may point to the center area inside a track or, less often, to farmland close to the main buildings. Across these uses, the idea is usually the same: the inner part of a larger space.
