An obelisk is a tall, four-sided, tapering monument that ends in a small pyramid-shaped top, often called a pyramidion. We usually connect this form with ancient Egypt, where it began in the Old Kingdom and became especially important in later periods. The word comes from the Greek obeliskos, meaning "little spit," because the Greeks thought the shape looked like a pointed skewer.

In ancient Egypt, these monuments were often raised in pairs in front of temple gateways. They were linked with the sun god Ra and were seen as symbols of the sun's power. Many Egyptian obelisks were carved from a single block of stone, usually granite, and covered with hieroglyphs describing the ruler who ordered them.
