Neoconservatism is a political ideology that arose in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, at first among intellectuals who were disappointed with the New Left but still kept some liberal views. It is not simply traditional conservatism; it is a distinct blend of ideas that has strongly influenced American foreign policy for decades.

At its core, neoconservatism combines several key tenets: a belief in free markets and limited government (typical conservative values), a strong emphasis on national security, and an assertive—even interventionist—approach to international affairs. Unlike older "paleoconservatives" who favored isolationism or restraint, neoconservatives advocate for actively promoting democracy abroad, often through military force if deemed necessary. They believe the United States has a unique responsibility to lead the world and defend its interests against authoritarian regimes.

The term "neoconservative" is often associated with a group of intellectuals who began as anti-Stalinist liberals or socialists but became increasingly critical of what they saw as the excesses of the 1960s counterculture. Figures like Irving Kristol, Norman Podhoretz, and later Paul Wolfowitz were central to shaping this ideology.

Neoconservatism gained significant influence during the Reagan administration and reached its peak during the George W. Bush years following the September 11 attacks. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 is often cited as the clearest example of neoconservative foreign policy in action, driven by a belief in regime change and the global spread of democratic values. However, it is important to note that neoconservatism is not a single, uniform ideology; there are internal debates and variations within the movement. The term has also become highly politicized and is often used negatively by critics. Today, while its direct influence rises and falls, understanding its history remains important for understanding modern political discourse.
