“Neoconservative” is a political term that came out of American intellectual life in the mid-20th century. It is often used for thinkers and policymakers who started on the liberal or socialist side but later moved toward conservatism, especially because they felt the New Left of the 1960s had become too radical or too hostile to the United States. Even after that shift, many still believed that democracy should be actively promoted at home and abroad.

The ideas usually linked with neoconservatism include belief in a special American role in world affairs, strong support for military power and national security, willingness to use force to defend U.S. interests, doubt about the effectiveness of international bodies such as the United Nations, and support for spreading democracy, sometimes through direct intervention.

The term became especially well known during the George W. Bush administration (2001-2009), when several important figures were described this way. It was closely tied to support for the Iraq War after the September 11 attacks, with the argument that removing Saddam Hussein could protect American interests and help bring democracy to the Middle East.

However, “neocon” is often used negatively by critics, who say these ideas are too hawkish, too willing to reshape other countries, and too quick to rely on military action. Because of that, the word is politically charged and often appears in arguments about foreign policy and national security. At the same time, not everyone given this label agrees on every issue, and people do not always mean exactly the same thing when they use it.

Today, the height of its influence may be over, but the ideas connected to it still shape political debate in the United States and beyond. Knowing the term helps when following discussions about war, democracy promotion, national security, and America's role in the world.
