Multiplication is a fast way of adding the same number again and again. Imagine you're collecting stickers: if you get 3 stickers every day for 5 days, instead of adding 3+3+3+3+3, you can simply do 3 x 5. It helps you find the total when you have several equal groups.

Multiplication isn't just for whole numbers, either. You can use it with fractions, decimals, and even negative numbers. You can also think of it as scaling something; if a recipe calls for 2 cups of flour and you want to double it, you use multiplication (2 x 2 = 4 cups). It's a basic math operation, used everywhere from finding area to talking about growth.

Multiplication is one of the four basic operations in arithmetic, along with addition, subtraction, and division. It often begins as repeated addition of equal groups. Instead of adding a number to itself many times, like 5 + 5 + 5 + 5, multiplication gives you a shortcut: 4 x 5 = 20. In that example, it is asking, "What is the total in four groups of five?"

The numbers being multiplied are called factors, and the result is called the product. So, in the equation 7 x 8 = 56, 7 and 8 are factors, and 56 is the product.
