However, the term is not limited to the physical world. It is frequently used as a metaphor for anything deceptive or unreal: a false promise, an unreachable goal, or a misleading appearance. For example: "The promise of quick riches proved to be a mirage." Or, "After years of struggle, the prospect of peace felt like a distant mirage."
