mew

C2
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mjˈuː/

US

  • /ˈmju/

Description

"Mew" is the soft, high-pitched cry most people connect with a kitten, and sometimes with an adult cat as well. It is lighter and smaller than a full "meow" and often suggests hunger, worry, or a quiet wish for attention. You can also use it as a verb: a kitten can mew at the door when it wants to be let in. In a wider sense, the word can also describe a similar thin cry from another animal or bird, though the cat sense is by far the most common.
