Because of that history, the word does not usually mean rhythm in a general modern sense. It usually points to this older, measured approach to notation. You may see it in phrases like "mensural notation" or "mensural music," especially in writing about early music, manuscript study, or performance practice.
Modern notation still uses measured note values, but the specific forms and rules of mensural notation belong mostly to scholarship and the study or performance of early music. So if you meet "mensural" in context, it usually suggests something measured, and most often something connected to historical musical notation.
