To melt is most commonly understood as the process of changing from a solid state to a liquid state through the application of heat. Think of an ice cube left on a warm countertop—it doesn't disappear; it transforms into water. "The snowman began to melt in the afternoon sun." This physical process applies to many substances beyond water: metals are melted in furnaces, wax melts in a candle flame, and cheese melts over a burger.

However, "melt" isn't limited to physical changes. It frequently describes a figurative softening or yielding.
