The word "mask" has an interesting dual meaning: it can refer to a physical object and to the act of hiding something. Most literally, a mask is a covering worn over the face to conceal identity, protect the wearer, or create a certain appearance. Think of Venetian masks worn during Carnival, ceremonial masks used in traditions, or modern protective masks worn by doctors and construction workers. In each case, the face covering changes what others see or adds some form of protection.

However, "mask" also describes the act of concealing feelings, intentions, or even a problem. To "wear a mask" can mean hiding your true self and showing a different image to other people. Someone might mask sadness with laughter or mask anger with politeness. In this sense, the word is often about emotional protection or self-control.

The idea extends beyond emotions. You can mask a problem by temporarily covering it up, such as painting over damage instead of fixing it. In computing, people may mask data to hide sensitive details. In theatre, masks help create characters and shape the way a performance feels to the audience.

Historically, masks have played important roles in rituals, performances, and social life across many cultures. From ancient Greek drama to modern protests and festivals, they have been powerful symbols of identity, disguise, status, and transformation.
