mask

B2
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mˈɑːsk/

US

  • /ˈmæsk/

Description

A mask is not just for Halloween. It can be something you wear, like a superhero mask that hides your identity or a surgical mask that helps protect you from germs. But "mask" is also something people do. They may mask their true feelings by acting happy when they are actually sad. In that way, it can be a cover for your face or for your emotions.

You can also mask a problem by hiding it for a while, like covering a stain with paint, or mask your intentions by keeping them secret until the right moment. In computers, masking can mean hiding part of the information. So whether it is about protection, disguise, or hidden feelings, the idea is usually the same: something is being covered or kept out of view.
