respirator

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /rɪspˈɪreɪtə/

US

  • /ˈrɛspərˌeɪtər/

Description

Imagine being surrounded by dust, smoke, or germs in the air. A respirator is a special mask or breathing device that helps protect you by filtering the air before you breathe it in. It does more than a simple face covering because it is made to block harmful particles, and sometimes gases, more effectively. Firefighters, health workers, and construction workers may all use one when the air is unsafe. You may have heard of N95 models, which are made to filter out most tiny airborne particles. In some medical contexts, the word can also mean a machine that helps a person breathe.
