The word "margin" has several meanings, all revolving around the idea of an edge, boundary, or allowance. Most commonly, we think of it as the blank space surrounding text on a page—that little bit of white space at the top, bottom, left, and right. This margin provides visual breathing room and makes the text easier to read.

But "margin" extends far beyond just paper. In everyday speech, it often means extra room, a safety buffer, or the amount by which one thing is ahead of another. If you leave a margin of time, you leave some extra time in case things go wrong. If there is only a small margin for error, there is very little room for mistakes. A politician can win by a narrow margin, and an athlete can finish by a wide margin.

In business, "margin" often refers to the difference between cost and selling price, or to the amount of profit. A company operating on a thin margin is making only a small profit on each sale. In this sense, the word suggests a narrow gap between what comes in and what goes out.

In finance and investing, margin refers to money put up, or credit allowed, when someone buys assets with borrowed funds. It acts as backing against possible losses. A "margin call" happens when the value falls too far and more money must be added to the account.

In sports, the margin is the difference in score or result between two sides. More broadly, the word can also suggest the outer edge of a place or area, though that use is less common in everyday speech.

So whether it is the blank edge of a page, the gap between two results, extra room for safety, a company's profit space, or money backing a borrowed investment, "margin" keeps the same basic idea: an edge, a gap, or room in between.
