"Lowly" is an adjective that describes someone or something as humble, plain, not important, or low in rank. It does not usually refer to physical height. Instead, it points to position, status, or importance in a social or descriptive sense.

Originally, "lowly" strongly suggested social hierarchy. It was often used for servants, peasants, and others with little power or wealth. In older writing, a phrase like "a lowly serf" or "a lowly maid" would clearly place that person near the bottom of society. Because of that history, the word still carries a sense of rank and place, even when used more lightly today.

In modern English, "lowly" can still describe a humble social or work position, as in "a lowly clerk" or "a lowly worker." It can also be used more broadly for something simple and unremarkable, especially in a literary or slightly playful tone.
