Description

"Long" is not just about how far something reaches in space. It is also about how much time something takes, and sometimes about a deep feeling of wanting something. A long road keeps going, a long story takes time to tell, and a long wait can feel tiring. You can talk about long hair, a long winter, or a long time ago. But "long" can also be a verb. To long for something means to want it very much, often with a sad or warm feeling. Think of a sailor longing for home after months at sea.

The word comes from Old English and has long been used for things that stretch in space or time. It also appears in common phrases like "in the long run," "a long shot," and "long live the king."
