The act of lending involves temporarily giving something to another person, with the expectation that it will be returned or repaid. It's more than simply giving something away; it implies a future return.

You might lend a helping hand, offering your assistance for a period of time. Or you could lend credence to a story, meaning your support or the evidence you provide makes the story seem more believable. Most commonly, we think of it as giving someone an object, a book, a tool, or money, with the agreement that they will return it at a later date.

The context is important. A bank lends money with the expectation of repayment plus interest, which is a formal arrangement. Your neighbor might lend you a cup of sugar, expecting you to replace it later. A generous person readily lends support to those in need, while someone hesitant to lend may be wary or distrustful.
