A knot is fundamentally a fastening made by looping and crossing a strand of material—such as rope, string, or yarn. It is a primary way to join things together securely or to restrict movement. Sailors have historically relied on a vast vocabulary of knots for everything from securing sails to mooring ships, each designed for a specific purpose and strength. For instance, the bowline knot is famous for creating a fixed loop that won't slip, while the figure-eight knot is valued for its reliability as a stopper.

However, "knot" extends far beyond the physical world. We use it metaphorically to describe anything tangled, complicated, or problematic. A "knotty problem" is one that is exceptionally difficult to solve. Physically, you might feel a "knot in your throat" when you're emotional, describing a tightness that makes speaking difficult.

The phrase "tie the knot" is a popular idiom for getting married—a symbolic binding together of two lives. If a person is "tied up in knots," it implies they are mentally overwhelmed, anxious, or confused. Interestingly, the word also serves as a unit of speed: one nautical mile per hour is called a "knot." This harks back to the historical practice of using knots tied at regular intervals on a log line to measure a ship's speed through the water. Whether you're securing a boat, facing a mental challenge, or measuring speed at sea, the "knot" represents connection, complexity, and tension.
