The word "interceptor" traces back to the Latin interceptare, meaning "to seize or catch on the way." At its core, an interceptor is something designed to meet, stop, catch, or block something else before it reaches its target or continues on its path.

Historically, the term is strongly linked with military defense. An interceptor aircraft is a fast plane built to rise quickly, meet hostile aircraft, and stop them before they can attack. An interceptor missile works in much the same way, launched to destroy or disable another missile in flight. In this sense, the word carries a clear image of speed, timing, and prevention.

The term also appears in technical and mechanical settings. In software and network security, an interceptor may be a component that examines, changes, or blocks requests, messages, or data as they pass through a system. In plumbing, a grease interceptor catches fats, oils, and grease before they enter the main sewer line. In each case, the purpose is similar: something is placed in the path so that unwanted material, signals, or threats can be stopped early.

The word can sometimes also describe a person or vehicle whose role is to stop or seize something in transit, but this use is less common than the military and technical ones. Whether it is a high-speed aircraft, a defensive missile, a software layer, or a plumbing device, an interceptor acts before arrival. That sense of stepping in early is what ties the different uses together.
