inseparably

B2
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɪnsˈɛpərəbli/

US

  • /ˌɪnˈsɛpərəbli/

Description

Imagine two puzzle pieces that fit so well they seem meant to stay together. That is how things connected inseparably feel. It means being so closely joined that they cannot be separated, or are very hard to think of apart. Think of a mother's love for her child, or the bond between lifelong best friends; these connections can tie people inseparably together. Sometimes the word also describes things that are joined in a physical way, like parts fixed so firmly that they seem to belong as one.

The word comes from "separate" with a negative prefix, so it gives the idea of not being able to pull things apart. You might read in a fairy tale that two lovers were joined inseparably, or hear about historical figures whose names are inseparably linked because of what they did together.
