To be an inheritor means to receive something that has been passed down from someone else. Most often, this refers to property, money, titles, or duties received after a person's death, as in "the sole inheritor of his father's fortune." In this common sense, an inheritor is much like an heir: someone who has a legal or family claim to what is left behind.

The word can also be used in a broader, more literary way. A person may be called an inheritor of traditions, beliefs, responsibilities, or a cultural heritage. A community can be described as the inheritor of a long history. An artist may be seen as an inheritor of an older style, carrying it into a new age.
