While the word "heir" is often used broadly in everyday conversation for anyone who inherits, a legatee is someone chosen to receive a particular gift set out in the will. Think of it like this: if Great Aunt Mildred leaves you her antique teapot in her will, you are the legatee of that teapot. If she leaves the rest of her estate to your cousin, your cousin may be the main beneficiary, but you are still the legatee of that heirloom. The term appears most often in legal contexts: lawyers talking about estate distribution, the formal reading of a will, or documents that spell out a person's final wishes.

You will not usually hear people say, "Oh, he's my legatee," in casual conversation, but you may see the word in legal papers or in novels about inheritance. The word highlights that the gift is intentionally named in the estate plan. So if a will says that something special should go to you, then you are the legatee.
