The meaning of "identifier" changes a little depending on the situation. In everyday life, it can be as simple as a label on a jar or a license plate on a car. In biology, names are used to classify and distinguish species. In official systems, numbers and codes are often used to tell one record from another.

However, the term is especially common in computer science and programming. Here, it usually means a name given to a variable, function, class, or other part of a program. These names must follow certain rules, and they usually need to be different from other names in the same scope so the computer can read the instructions clearly. For example, in the code x = 5, x is the name used for the value.

Beyond coding, identifiers are also central to databases, networking, and security systems. A database may use a primary key to pick out one row. A network uses addresses to tell devices apart. A login system uses usernames or account IDs to connect actions to the right user.
