hideous

A1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /hˈɪdiəs/

US

  • /ˈhɪdiəs/

Description

If something is hideous, it is far more than just unattractive. It is so ugly, shocking, or unpleasant that it makes people feel disgust. You might use it for a monster in a scary movie, a very bad outfit, or even a terrible crime. In that last case, the word does not describe appearance, but how cruel or upsetting the thing is. It is a strong word, used when something feels deeply awful.
