It is a strong word, used when something feels deeply awful.

The word hideous goes beyond simply "ugly." It describes something so shockingly unpleasant or frightening that it causes disgust or even horror. While many things can be unattractive, a hideous object, person, scene, or act feels extreme and hard to ignore.

Originally, hideous was connected to the idea of fear. That history helps explain why the word feels stronger than ordinary words for bad looks. In both cases, the word suggests a strong negative reaction, not mild dislike.

Think of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz; her appearance is often described as hideous. Or imagine a place damaged by war: it could be called hideous because of the suffering and destruction there. So when something is hideous, the idea is not just that it looks bad, but that it feels deeply disturbing or offensive.
