unsightly

A1
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʌnsˈaɪtli/

US

  • /ənˈsaɪtli/

Description

If something is unsightly, it's not pleasing to the eye; think of a messy room or a building covered in graffiti. It doesn't necessarily mean horrible, just not nice to look at. Chipped paint on an otherwise beautiful house might be considered unsightly. Sometimes things are naturally unpleasant to look at, like a healing wound, but often the problem comes from neglect or damage. You wouldn't describe a majestic mountain as unsightly, but you might say it about a pile of garbage.
