Heterozygosity refers to the state of having different alleles at a gene location, or to the amount of that difference seen across genes or across a population. To unpack that, genes are instructions for building and running an organism, and alleles are different versions of those instructions, like slightly different versions of a recipe. A locus is simply the place where a gene sits on a chromosome.

So, if you inherit two identical alleles for a particular gene, you are homozygous at that locus. If you inherit two different alleles, you are heterozygous, and that locus shows heterozygosity. In some cases, one allele is dominant and shapes the visible trait, but the exact result depends on the gene involved.

The idea is important not only for one organism but also for whole populations. In population genetics and conservation biology, heterozygosity is often used as a measure of genetic diversity. A population with high heterozygosity usually has more variation in its gene pool. That variation can help a species adapt to environmental change, handle disease better, and lower some of the risks that come with inbreeding.

Think of a forest: a forest filled with only one type of tree is vulnerable to a single disease that could wipe it out. But a more varied forest is usually more resilient. In a similar way, populations with higher heterozygosity are often better equipped to survive challenges. Scientists measure it in endangered species to assess genetic health and guide conservation work. It also matters in agriculture and breeding, where genetic variation can affect vigor, resilience, and useful traits.

So, heterozygosity is not just a technical biology term. It names an important form of genetic difference, both in individuals and in populations, and that difference often plays a key role in health, survival, and adaptation.
