The term "hardliner" describes a person who sticks very firmly to a set of beliefs, policies, or principles and is not willing to make concessions. It usually refers to someone whose views are strict and whose approach leaves little room for compromise. The word often suggests toughness and consistency, but it also carries a sense of rigidity. In many contexts, especially political ones, it hints that the person may be too stubborn or too resistant to discussion.

You will most often see "hardliner" in news and political writing. A reporter might describe a hardliner in a government, a party, a religious movement, or a negotiating team. For example, one group in a party may want practical compromise, while the hardliners push for a stricter line and reject any deal they see as too soft. The related adjective "hardline" is also common, as in "a hardline position" or "a hardline policy."

The word does not always mean the person is extreme in every sense, but it does mean they are difficult to sway. That is an important distinction. A hardliner may simply be someone who refuses to give ground, even when others are trying to settle a conflict or reach an agreement.
